Mexican vehicle sales up 2.4% in March 2026
On April 6, Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 131,569 light vehicles in March 2026, representing an increase of 2.4% from the 128,434 sales in March 2025.
Nissan led the market as the best-selling brand, with 22,171 units delivered, down 6.2% year over year. General Motors ranked second with 17,851 units, posting a 0.9% decrease followed by VW group with 14,357 units sold, up 3.7%; Toyota with 10,129 units, down 7.0%; and KIA completed the top five with 9,203 units sold, representing a 4.6% year-over-year increase.
Regarding performance of Chinese brands, MG led the group with 5,152 units, reflecting a 28.6% increase. Geely followed with 4,219 units sold, up 319.4% year over year, while JAC reported sales of 2,035 units, up 1.2%. Changan sold 1,970 units, a 57.6% increase.
Vehicle sales maintained a growth trend during the first quarter of the year. New vehicle sales in March were supported by pre–Semana Santa (Easter holiday) purchases, as well as by financial institutions strategically keeping auto loan interest rates low in anticipation of the Banco de Mexico’s policy rate cut implemented.
Momentum among Chinese automakers such as MG and Geely was particularly notable within the top 10 rankings. Amid an upcoming review of customs agreements, recent reports have highlighted discussions by SAIC GM Wuling regarding potential vehicle production in Mexico, along with announcements of new plant openings by major global auto parts suppliers. The entry of emerging manufacturers and suppliers into Mexico’s automotive industry is expected to continue.

Mexican vehicle sales down 0.3% in February 2026, a high level for February
On March 4, Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 118,305 light vehicles in February, representing a decrease of 0.3% from the 118,602 sales in February 2025.
Nissan led the market as the best-selling brand, with 20,264 units delivered, down 5.5% year over year. General Motors ranked second with 16,081 units, posting a 3.0% increase followed by VW group with 13,827 units sold, up 1.4%; KIA with 9,202 units, up 3.4%; and Mazda completed the top five with 8,321 units sold, representing a 10.5% year-over-year decrease.
Regarding performance of Chinese brands, Geely led the group with 3,207 units, reflecting a 249.0% increase. MG Motor followed with 3,154 units sold, up 1.6% year over year, while JAC reported sales of 1,717 units, down 18.4%. Changan sold 1,712 units, a 78.5% increase. Another five Chinese brands reported sales too, including Zeekr and Lynk&Co, that started reporting sales to INEGI in February 2026.
Vehicle sales remained broadly stable compared to February 2025, declining by only 305 units. According to Guillermo Rosales, executive president of AMDA, the result ranks among the highest levels for February on record. In addition, the continued reduction of the benchmark interest rate set by the central bank, Banxico, has made credit more accessible, supporting consumer demand and helping sustain sales levels. It was also recently reported that Mexico’s automotive industry could benefit from new U.S. tariff measures. After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the U.S. president lacked authority to impose broad tariffs under the IEEPA, previously applied duties were reduced from 25% to 15%, potentially improving Mexico’s relative competitive position.

Mexican vehicle sales up 8.7% in January 2026
On February 5, Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) reported sales of 131,491 light vehicles in January, representing an increase of 8.7% from the 120,953 sales in January 2025. This marked the highest January level on record in INEGI statistics.
The growth in the market was mainly driven by the increase in sales among Chinese brands, with MG Motor increasing sales by 55.0% to 6,198 units, Geely by 245.3% to 3,356 units, JAC by 3.2% to 2,008 units, Changan by 89.8% to 1,568 units, GWM declining by 7.3% to 1,236 units, and Jetour posting a 218.2% increase to 455 units.
Nissan remains as the best-selling brand in the country, with 24,695 units delivered in January, an increase of 21.8% from the previous year.
Overall, Volkswagen Group sales of 14,126 units in January decreased by 5.0% from the same month in 2025.
General Motors sold 16,339 units, an increase of 3.9% from last year.
Ford sold 4,017 units in January, a decrease of 5.2% from 2025, while Stellantis sales increased by 14.8% to 8,106 units in January.
Toyota sold 11,669 units, an increase of 6.3%, while Honda sold 4,054 units, an increase of 17.5%, and Mazda sold 8,704 units, an increase of 11.1% from the same month last year.
Kia sales increased by 5.0% to 9,032 units, while Hyundai sales increased by 3.7% to 4,125 units.
The strong start in January was largely driven by ample vehicle supply, supported by the post-pandemic recovery in OEM operating rates, including the normalization of supply chains amid improving semiconductor availability. In addition, vehicle lineups in the Mexican market have expanded. Meanwhile, on January 1, the Mexican government significantly raised tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts from non-FTA countries such as China. Developments in U.S. trade policy will continue to warrant close monitoring going forward.
