Canadian sales down 8.2% in March, down 4.4% in Q1 2026
On April 2, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reported that Canadian vehicle sales in March of just under 170,000 units represented an 8.2% decline from the 185,000 units the previous March, with one less selling day in the month than last year. March sales this year were noticeably lower than the first two months of 2026.
The SAAR for March came in at 1.85 million units, again lower than earlier in the year, and the lowest level seen since September 2025.
The ZEV market picked up in March, with a number of models surpassing 1,000 sales for the month after a combination of renewed Federal incentives and high gas prices encouraged a switch in propulsion means.
For Q1 2026, the market came in at 406,000 units, down 4.4% from the same period in 2025, with highlights that include:
• GM led the market with sales at over 64,000 units in Q1
• Among volume brands, Stellantis sales increased 14.9% for Q1, and Volkswagen sales increased 12.7% for the quarter
• The luxury market overall saw a sales decline in Q1, with exceptions such as Land Rover which experienced a 67.2% increase in sales over the same quarter in the previous year
• Light trucks accounted for 88.8% of total new light vehicle sales in Q1 2026 up from 88.1% in Q1 2025

Canadian sales down 0.2% in February
On March 4, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants reported that Canadian vehicle sales in February fell 0.2% from the previous February to just under 122,000 vehicles, which was still a solid performance considering the frostiness of both the cold winter temperatures and tariff war in place with its southern neighbor.
The SAAR for February came in at 2.0 million, down slightly from January, but better than any month during the last half of 2025.
On the Canadian automotive home front, the month of February brought the introduction of the EVAP program offering a CAD 5,000 incentive for the purchase of EVs costing less than CAD 50,000.

Canadian sales down 2.9% in a very cold January
On February 4, DesRosiers Automotive Consultants announced that approximately 114,000 light vehicles were sold in January, down 6.3% from December 2025, and down 2.9% from January 2025, even with 1 more selling day than last year.
The SAAR in January, meanwhile, remained at a robust 2.08 million, higher than anything in Q3 or Q4 2025.
January sales must be seen in light of the current severe weather experienced across upper North America, however, and may or may not be a harbinger for what is yet to come in 2026. The current economic environment of tariffs, counter-tariffs, and trade deals will surely be interesting to watch.
