Australian new vehicle sales decrease 3.3% in March
On April 7, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 105,058 units in March 2026 represented a 3.3% decrease from March 2025. New vehicle sales of 282,862 units in the first three months of the year represented a 2.6% decrease YoY.
Passenger car sales of 13,101 units in March represented a 7.5% decrease from the same period in 2025, SUV sales of 66,329 units represented a 0.9% increase, LCV sales of 21,990 units represented a 10.5% decrease and MHCV sales of 3,638 units represented a 12.0% decrease.
A total of 15,839 battery electric vehicles from all sources were sold in March, accounting for 14.6% of total sales. FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that more consumers are considering electric vehicles (EVs) due to the disruption to fuel supply caused by conflict in the Middle East, along with the review into the fringe benefits tax concession for EVs. However, it is too early to determine whether this represents a structural shift in the market.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 19.3% to 16,574 units, Kia sales increased 0.2% to 7,320 units, BYD sales increased 50.0% to 7,217 units, Mazda sales decreased 10.6% to 7,156 units and Ford sales decreased 13.2% to 7,149 units. In addition to this, GWM (ranked at 7th), MG (9th), and Chery (10th), were up 29.3%, 7.4%, and 84.1%, respectively. The result shows that sales of Chinese automotive brands such as BYD and Chery significantly increased YoY.
The best-selling cars in March 2026, in order of popularity, were Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Nissan X-Trail.
