E-Axles and motor technologies such as EESM (magnet-free motors) explained

Automotive World 2024 Technical Conference: Nissan, Vitesco

Summary

Special technical conference sessions were held (January 24-26, 2024) in conjunction with the exhibitions at Automotive World 2024 at the Tokyo Big Sight international exhibition center in January 2024.

This report introduces the contents of the presentations by Vitesco Technologies Japan K.K. and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. on e-Axles and motors.

Mr. Hirofumi Yudahira, Electrification Solution Div. Japan Head of Innovation, Vitesco Technologies Japan, K.K. (Vitesco), gave a presentation on the "Latest Technologies Trends in e-axle," an electric unit integrating a drive motor, inverter, and reduction gear (reducer/gearbox). He introduced the history of product development at Vitesco Technologies, followed by an explanation of the development of each elemental technology for next-generation products.

Mr. Shunji Ohki, Powertrain/EV Technology Development Headquarters Expert Leader, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., gave a presentation on "Nissan's motor development aimed at reducing rare earth usage," explaining Nissan's electrification strategy. He also explained efforts to reduce the amount of rare earths used in motors, as well as the technology of electrically-excited synchronous motors (EESM) that do not use magnets.
