The JSAE Automotive Engineering Exposition 2023, the largest automotive technology exhibition in Japan, was held at the Pacifico Yokohama convention and exhibition center from May 24 to 26, 2023. The industry event was a great success, especially on the last day, when the venue was bustling with visitors because the COVID-19 crisis seems to have finally subsided. This article reports on some of the more notable HMI-related items from among the many exhibits.
The following four items reflect the major trends in HMI-related technologies displayed at recent exhibitions, and many examples of technological developments within these trends were on display at this year's JSAE exhibition as well. This report will focus on introducing and elaborating on these topics.
- Display technology to improve visibility while driving
- GUI (Graphical User Interface) integration for large screens
- New HMI (Human Machine Interface) integrated with the interior
- Technology for estimating driver and passenger status based on biometric measurements
In general, it could be stated that the main theme related to next-generation HMI technologies was, "More attuned with people, and providing input/output matching their condition and emotions.” Although there were no spectacular presentations of such next-generation HMI at this year's exhibition, there were many exhibits of basic technologies, including technologies for estimating driver and occupant conditions, which will serve as the basis for such HMI, making it apparent that we are now in a period of transition toward the next generation of HMI.
