JSAE 2023 in Yokohama: AD and ADAS; SDV Initiatives

Monitoring systems, E/E architecture, cyber security

Summary

The Automotive Engineering Exposition 2023, organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc. (JSAE), was held May 24-26 at the Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition Hall and drew a large crowd reminiscent of motor shows before the COVID pandemic. To visit inside the booths of automobile companies, a large number of visitors lined up in the aisles. It was also eye-catching to see some of the parts-related booths change from a traditional exhibition format to a presentation format to introduce product features.

In the area of AD (autonomous driving) and ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems), large-scale, high-performance AD ECUs were introduced with a view to supporting automated driving Level 3 and above, and an ECU-intensive functional layout is progressing in place of the conventional decentralized layout. The liquid-cooled ECUs stood out because of the increased amount of information processing due to the concentration of functions and the resulting heat generation problem in the chips. In terms of system construction, the increasing number of SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) initiatives and security-related technologies and system support are also indicative of changing technology trends. The auto companies introduced their distinctive approaches. The expo was interesting in that each of the exhibitors displayed their own unique characteristics, such as their efforts to monitor the health of drivers, sensor technology, and control technology.
