Carbon Neutrality Measures of Japanese Automakers and Suppliers

New technologies for each industrial sector throughout the supply chain toward decarbonization

Summary

In Japan, companies are required to take carbon neutrality (CN) measures by 2050 in accordance with government policy, but there are no official standards for calculating CFP (Carbon Foot Print) or CN certification. This report summarizes the commonly used CFP calculation, CN certification, and disclosure rules and related organizations.

In addition, this report examines the CFP situation and CN approach unique to automakers based on a Toyota case study, as well as important CFP items that should be reduced for each operation (materials, processing, heat treatment, etc.) and new technologies with significant CN reduction effects, information that was extracted from various exhibitions held from October to November 2022 and information disclosed by each company. Note that CN measures for businesses that use social infrastructure to supply an unspecified number of people, such as electricity, gas, and oil companies, are not included.

Japan's 1st Green Factory Expo was held at the same time as the 2022 Automotive World Nagoya, organized by RX Japan Ltd., where many major manufacturers exhibited. The Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF), organized by the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association (JMTBA), also attracted a large number of attendees, with CN measures in the automotive industry being a matter of great interest.
