The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) World Congress 2022 was hosted in Los Angeles, California, U.S., on September 18 through September 22, 2022. Originally, the ITS World Congress was scheduled to be hosted in Los Angeles in 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ITS World Congress 2022 had more than 6,000 attendees from 64 countries, over 300 exhibitors and 180 panel and education sessions during the five-day period. The theme of the ITS World Congress 2022 was “Transformation by Transportation”, emphasizing the potential changes created by intelligent transportation systems and technologies.
One topic of concern discussed at the ITS World Congress 2022 was the need for increased safety. Multiple sessions highlighted the trend of increasing roadway fatalities in the U.S., despite the improved technology available on the roads. A plenary session emphasized the need to improve road safety and stop the trend of increasing road deaths, promoting the use of a safe systems approach. Another education session showcased projects, technologies and efforts from both companies, academia and government agencies to improve safety.
