Summary

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Denso Corporation (Denso) announced in December 2019 that they would establish a next-generation semiconductor R&D company in 2020. This points out that in the background of automobile manufacturers and electrical equipment manufacturers setting out on semiconductor research and development, the role of semiconductor technology in next-generation automotive systems is more importance than ever.

In this report, the trends of reorganizations by domestic and overseas automotive semiconductor manufacturers and the initiatives of each company towards next-generation automotive semiconductors will be investigated. Along with the increasing demand for and higher performance of semiconductors for smart phones, even automotive semiconductors have changed from “semiconductors as a device” to “semiconductors as a system (i.e. SOC: System on a Chip)”. Recently, edge computing in the era of AI and autonomous driving is becoming a competitive field for in-vehicle information devices linked to smartphones and semiconductors configured for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).
