The 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) was held from January 14 through January 27, 2019 in Detroit, Michigan, and opened to the public on January 19. The NAIAS recorded 774,179 attendees in 2019, a decrease from the 809,161 attendees in 2018, primarily due to a snowstorm during the exhibition’s opening weekend. In an effort to generate additional interest in the exhibition, the NAIAS will take place in June starting in 2020.
While U.S. automakers at the 2019 NAIAS reflected the shifting preferences of the U.S. market towards larger vehicles with their new products, Asian OEMs targeted a wider range of segments with their unveilings. Toyota focused on sport and performance models with the Toyota Supra and Lexus LC Convertible concept. Both Nissan and GAC focused on future EVs with concepts including the Nissan IMs EV sports sedan, Infiniti QX Inspiration, and GAC Entranze. SUVs and crossovers such as the Kia Telluride and Honda Passport were also showcased, while Hyundai showed a performance version of the Elantra GT.
This report is the second of two reports which highlights notable vehicle models shown at the 2019 NAIAS. Specifically, this report focuses on models shown by Asian OEMs, specifically Toyota, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Honda and GAC. A report detailing models shown by U.S. and European OEMs at the 2019 NAIAS was previously released.
