Summary

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) estimates that to achieve 100% electric mobility in India by 2047, all new vehicle sales for intra-city public transport fleets will need to be pure electric vehicles by 2030, with 40% of new vehicle sales in the country to be pure electric vehicles by 2030, and 60% of new vehicle sales in the country to employ greener technologies such as hybrids & alternative fuels by 2030.

In February 2018, a number of Indian newspapers reported that the government shifted its target for electric vehicles sold in the country from 100% to 30% by 2030. Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari said, "There is no need for an explicit policy to promote electric vehicles. The government is preparing action plans instead." As a result, OEMs have more freedom to choose not only electric vehicles, but hybrids and other technologies to reduce CO2 emissions and crude oil imports.

With estimates indicating that India’s urban population will nearly double in the next decade, from 377 million in 2011 to approximately 600 million in 2030, shared EVs represent a critical pathway to provide efficient, clean, and safe mobility to the citizens of India’s cities. India can save 64% in anticipated passenger road-based mobility-related energy demand and 37% in carbon emissions in 2030 by pursuing a shared, electric, and connected mobility future.

India’s aggressive push for electric mobility is compelling auto part manufacturers and automakers to draw up early plans for electrification. The majority of Indian OEMs have started working on their electrification strategies. The emergence of e-mobility in India also brings the opportunity for new partnerships, joint ventures and the arrival of new players in this business space.
