Summary
Toyota has developed the new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) powertrain for its 2.0L engine class vehicles which comprise the majority of its global sales. Following the first phase of TNGA development, which centered on the inline 4-cylinder 2.5L gasoline engine, the second phase of TNGA focuses on its 2.0L gasoline engine, which is expected to make significant contributions to the improvement of fuel economy and driving performance.
In the new CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) for front-wheel drives (FF), the world's first "launch gear" mechanism was adopted, which significantly improves both driving performance and environmental performance. Further, by standardization of manufacturing and assembly processes, Toyota was able to develop production lines that are capable of manufacturing at higher speeds with the flexibility to produced unique model variants, allowing for faster delivery of products to end users.
By the end of 2023, vehicles equipped with TNGA-based powertrains will be extended to approximately 80% of Toyota's vehicle sales volume (for Japan, the U.S., Europe, and China), reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 18%.
