Introduction

Transmissions are a core component of a vehicle and are manufactured in-house by OEMs or by a limited number of specialized manufacturers due to their large number of parts and complex assembly.

The term "AT" used in this report does not refer to automatic transmissions in general, but specifically to transmissions with the following configurations.

Multi-speed transmission using a torque converter and hydraulic clutch (planetary or parallel-shaft type)
In contrast to the above, systems that eliminate the torque converter and instead use a multi-plate clutch or an electric motor
In contrast to the above, a system that retains the torque converter while also utilizing a clutch and an electric motor
This report also excludes systems that adopt the above configuration for the sub-transmission (e.g., the Toyota THS II shown on the far right in Figure 1 below).

Additional information:

While this type is commonly found in hybrid vehicles (see Figure 1, far left), Mercedes-Benz has long used multi-plate clutches in its sports cars, and Mazda has been using them since 2022.
Examples in passenger cars include the Toyota i-FORCE MAX, which utilizes the torque amplification characteristics of the torque converter in response to sudden loads and its ability to absorb power fluctuations (as detailed in the subsequent section "Overall Trends [Technology Trends] 1. New Technologies"). In addition, some hybrid systems include an automatic transmission (AT). Figure 1 below compares the main hybrid systems; however, in this report, the system on the far left is classified as an automatic transmission (AT) for the purposes of sales volume calculations and analysis.
