Global electrified vehicle sales and composition by powertrain (BEV/PHEV/HEV)
Sales of electrified vehicles (xEVs) in January in 12 major countries and three Nordic countries (15 countries in total) totaled 1.368 million units. This represents a significant decrease of 8.7% compared to the same month in 2025 and 39.6% compared to the previous month. The share of xEVs was 30.7%, down 8.2 points from 38.9% the previous month.
By powertrain, the sales volume of BEVs was 624,000 units (14.0% share), PHEVs 347,000 units (7.8% share), and HEVs 397,000 units (8.9% share). BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) in particular showed significant month-over-month (m/m) declines in both sales volume and market share. The large sales decline in China, a major market, had a significant impact, resulting in a year-over-year (y/y) decline as well. HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles) sales also declined from the previous month, with their market share expanding both year-over-year and month-over-month, supported by strong sales growth in Japan and the UK.
In China, sales of electric vehicles plummeted in January due to changes in the sales promotion policies for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs: BEVs, PHEVs, FCEVs (fuel-cell electric vehicles)). Conversely, in Thailand, Chinese car sales increased significantly in the final month of incentives under the EV 3.0 scheme (EV promotion measures). It is necessary to keep an eye on the trends in each country, such as significant policy changes that will continue to have a major impact on the sales of xEVs in the future.
