Hydrogen Engines for Motorcycles

Suzuki and Kawasaki vehicles exhibited at the Japan Mobility Show 2025

Summary

While social implementation of large (heavy-duty) hydrogen engines is progressing mainly in Europe, small engines are still in the process of basic research and advanced development. HySE, a research association in which all domestic Japanese motorcycle manufacturers participate, plays a central role in R&D activities in Japan in cooperation with universities and other organizations. On the other hand, Suzuki Motor Corporation (Suzuki) has been active in conducting its own research while participating in HySE research projects. This report provides an overview of recent technical conference presentations on small hydrogen engines.

Also at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Suzuki and Kawasaki Motors Corporation (Kawasaki) exhibited hydrogen-engine models of motorcycles that could actually be driven. Each vehicle borrows much technology from commercially available gasoline engine vehicles, but this report describes the hydrogen technology that is not available in the commercial vehicles. Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Yamaha) also exhibited a hydrogen minibike, but the engine was not disclosed, so it is omitted from this report.
