Japan Commercial Vehicles: Electrification and Business Alliances

Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles of Isuzu, Hino, and Mitsubishi Fuso

Summary

Commercial vehicle manufacturers are scrambling to respond to environmental concerns, and it is expected that business alliances between companies that incorporate external resources and knowledge to the extent possible will continue to increase. This report summarizes alliances between companies focusing on electrification technologies.

Regarding electrified models of commercial vehicles (CVs), manufacturers/OEMs have released light-duty electrified vehicles (xEVs), and their introduction to the market has begun mainly through the independent efforts of major transport companies; however, the current environment is not conducive to the mass introduction of medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. This report has summarized the future electrification plans of Japanese domestic OEMs.

The domestic market, with the exception of Hino, showed signs of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2023. As for Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino), the most recent October statistics show a large increase compared to the same month in 2023. The following table summarizes the sales trends by class in 2023 for each company.

The Isuzu and Hino brand route buses, announced in 2023 as the first large commercial EVs to be produced in Japan, went into production in November. Chinese-made vehicles are considerably ahead of the rest of the market, even Japan, and the sales trend of this model is attracting attention.
