New York International Auto Show: BEV HMI

New HMI trends in North America

Summary

Jacob Javits Convention Center

The 2023 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) was held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City from April 7-16, 2023. The show was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 crisis, and then revived in 2022, but the number of participating manufacturers had declined. This year, however, although Tesla did not participate, almost all of the major North American players were represented, including GM, Ford, Stellantis (Jeep), Hyundai (including Kia and Genesis), Toyota (including Lexus), Nissan, Honda, and Subaru. Although not as large or glamorous as the Beijing Motor Show held in late April, it was, on the contrary, a perfect opportunity to learn about the market "now" in North America.

Huge banners of Hyundai/Kia and Toyota decorated the entrance of the venue. The contrast between Hyundai/Kia's promotion of All Electric with its various award-winning BEVs, the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 and the Kia EV6 and Kia EV9, and Toyota's promotion of its all-around strategy by showcasing many types of vehicles was striking.

This report seeks to confirm the latest BEV HMI (Human Machine Interface) from the exhibits at this year’s show, and at the same time, focus on new trends of HMI in North America, which are not usually considered in Japan.
