New vehicle plants and R&D centers, global research/production/sales organization

Summary

Chinese private (not government affiliated) motor vehicle manufacturer Great Wall Motor Company Limited (hereafter GWM) has four major affiliated brands: Haval, WEY, ORA, and GWM Pickup. In the first half of 2019, GWM’s motor vehicle unit sales ranked in the top 10 in China and the company was number 1 in SUV unit sales. In recent years, to lay a firm foundation of its future globalization strategy, GWM has been making large-scale investments related to R&D and the expansion of its production scope. In addition, the company has integrated its components businesses and established four component manufacturers to increase the overall competitiveness of its affiliated companies. According to GWM’s official announcements, vehicle sales in 2019 reached 1.06 million units, an increase of 0.7% over the previous year. By brand, Haval accounted for 72.6% of the company’s sales, followed by GWM Pickup with a 14.3% share with sales of 151,000 units. In the Chinese pickup truck market, the company has held the top sales spot for more than twenty years. In some parts of China, access restrictions applied to pick-up trucks have been relaxed, and along with the launch of the new Pao pickup brand, GWM is expected to further increase its sales of pickup trucks. Overseas, in 2018 sales in South Africa were the highest, but in 2019, the vehicle assembly plant in Tula, Russia, started operations and it is expected that sales in Russia will surpass South Africa.
