JSAE 2017: Toyota exhibits newly developed powertrain

Newly developed multistage hybrid and technologies featured in new Prius PHV

Summary

The Automotive Engineering Exposition 2017 YOKOHAMA was held at Pacifico Yokohama for three days from May 24 to May 26, 2017. This report will cover Toyota's exhibition at the expo.

Toyota showcased its newly developed powertrain that was based on its TNGA Concept and announced in December 2016. Although the automaker released its first vehicle based on the TNGA Concept in December 2015 in the form of the fourth generation Prius, a version of the powertrain with all components specifically designed for it has so far only been featured in the LC500 and LC500h that were released in March 2017. The newly developed powertrain features a range of engines, transmissions, and hybrid systems, and the OEM plans to introduce a total of 19 models and 37 variations in the next five years.

Furthermore, Toyota also introduced new technology such as the dual motor drive system featured in its Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHV), which was released in February 2017.
