Continuing from the previous installment, which covered the European and U.S. makers, this report will cover models unveiled for the first time by Japanese and Korean OEMs at Auto Shanghai 2017, including green cars and concept vehicles.
Japanese automakers had a focus on exhibiting models exclusive to the local market and SUV models, which are popular in China. However, the booths were less crowded this year compared to the European, U.S. and Chinese manufacturers, and overall gave a quiet impression. Korean OEMs unveiled new models, while the security around the booth was enhanced on press day in response to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in Korea.
Nissan unveiled the Kicks compact SUV and Navara pickup truck in China for the first time. Honda presented the CR-V Hybrid and a prototype Acura TLX-L. Toyota showcased the Lexus NX, a facelifted new compact crossover SUV, and two concept cars designed by Chinese designers that adopted the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). Mazda promoted the CX-3 and MX-5 RF, which are imported and target younger generations. As for Mitsubishi Motors, of the concept vehicles and mass production models it exhibited most were SUVs. Subaru announced that it will launch the Subaru Global Platform-based XV in China, while at the same time promoting security and safety at the automaker's first motor show in China since it changed its company name. Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors unveiled compact SUV and sedan models targeted at the Chinese market for the first time.
